PV&T class J- #228 in blue & white

In 2012, a handful of older power was retired and set aside for either donation to railroad museums or parts. Most of them were in good enough shape for donation, but one of the trucks on B1 #228 had started cracking, so it was stripped for parts (and pre-nuclear steel) and the half frame with good trucks was remanufactured with a class Jish carbody.

#228 kept the original DC traction motors from the donor motor, so it has a low continuous HP rating (though, as befitting the robust construction of the original DC motors, it has a much higher 30 minute rating of 3600HP.)

It is in service on the PV&T line from Brattleboro to New London (as well as the P&W’s Connecticut river lines.)
