code describes
A an auxiliary unit (slug) that requires another unit for control and/or power
A B an auxiliary with battery power. It may or may not have a driving cab.
A DE a diesel-electric unit without driving controls (none currently exist on the system, but class DL5B would now be classified as this type.)
DP a dual-power (electic & diesel-electric) locomotive
DE a diesel-electric locomotive.
E AC a motor that requires AC overhead (ie: class 585)
E DC a motor that requires DC overhead (ie: class A)
E M a motor that can operate under both AC or DC power
ESB a motor with driving controls & a battery for operating over short stretches of unelectrified railway (class ESB)
S a steam locomotive
