These engines were snapped up in 1978 because KCC was, for some odd reason, shutting down their Bingham mine line-haul electrification? Despite being fairly compact these are huge motors; they were built with skyscraper cabs that just barely fit the railroad’s loading gauge.
The Portland shops rebuilt them, after crew complaints about the l-o-n-g cab ladders, with end ladders and somewhat more substantial catwalks, but otherwise they are unchanged from how they looked when operating in Utah.
They remained in service until 2023, when parts availability and the steady expansion of the AC electrification made them redundant.
