LT&L RSD-551 #396 in LT&L paint

One unit survives of the small fleet of Alco RSD-5s the LT&L once rostered. The great 244 purge of ‘66 cleaned most of the RSD-5s off the roster, but #396 was rebuilt with a 251-12 and remained in service.

396 kept this new prime mover for 68 years before it went back into the TdM shops to be remanufactured with a low emissions Cummins QSK50 and a completely AC drivetrain. As part of the remanufacturing, the entire engineroom was replaced with a new one that matched the roofline of the radiator section for a more traditionally Alco look (somewhat spoiled by the addition of a winged dynamic brake wart, but oh well.) Mechanically, 396 is almost identical to the remanufactured RS-350 units that the TdM shops were also working on, with the minor detail of having tri-mount trucks instead of the GSC “type B” trucks the RS-350e’s are fitted with.

After it was outshopped, it was assigned to the St. Stephen (NB) subdivision, where it is now operating.
