In 1995, ILW and the Portland Shops collaborated on a streamlined (Portland built the carbody and trucks, then ILW installed the electronics and prime mover) diesel-electric locomotive to test some of Portland’s diesel radial truck prototypes. After successfully testing those trucks, it was used to test various prime movers, then was stored until 2021, when the LT&L purchased it, had the TdM shops rebuild it into a passenger locomotive – with a steam generator – for the just-purchased Algoma Southern (exx-Algoma Central) Railway.
The ALSO put it into service as power for the revival of the Algoma Central’s old stopping train, and it continues in that service today.
