The ILW eco-642-t2 is the most powerful (and, unfortunately, the last – when Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail abruptly closed GMD in 2012 it left a lot of hard feelings in the union world and ILW’s shop floor let management know that they were not happy with the idea of buying components from that particular union-busting conglomerate) of ILW’s line of Caterpillar-powered products.
Their distinctive appearance is an artifact of having their carbodies fabricated at the (newly refurbished) Colonie Shops & using the ILW “shrink wrap” style sealed long hood.
The D&H ordered 20 of these units in 2006, the OSW merger in 2007 brought another six into the fleet, the D&H topped off their order with another 10 in 2008, and the LT&L bought 7 of them in spring 2012.
These units are rated at 4200HP, but are the most powerful diesels on the system since they can put out ~5050 HP for about 15 minutes before they start to overwhelm the cooling system.
In 2022, #1066 had a prime mover failure, and was sent to the TdM shops for repair. The repair involved yeeting the Cat diesel and replacing it with a Cummins QSK95, which meant that it got a wart on the long hood to fit the aftertreatment under. It is otherwise visually identical to an unmodified low-hood DL30.
All are in service.
