The PV&Ts two class 240 switchers (oddly, they never got a classification letter?) were purchased to replace steam switchers in Boston & Albany. These 85 ton units were initially assigned to terminal service in Albany & Boston, but when passenger traffic evaporated ended up on transfer & switching duties in Albany & Augusta.
They were generally reliable motors (as switchers are) and have stayed in service for approximately forever; 240 was finally sent to Musée ferrovaire de Parsons Vale in 2024, but in 2023 – after the P&W purchased the Narragansett Pier RR – 241 was rewired for 600VDC and sent there to handle the (minimal) switching on the branch.
