In late 2026, ILW produced a prototype road genset locomotive intended to be paired with an eco-e88rs to make a single 8800 HP dual power locomotive. The eco-688b is built on the standard eco-rs frame, but instead of having a cab it has two Cummins QSK95 prime movers which produce up to 8800HP.
The intent is to offer it as motive power for the (slowly electrifying) Western & Southern districts of the United Railway Trust, but such a complex and expensive calf unit needs to be tested for long enough to shake out subtle bugs. The LT&L has traditionally been happy to let ILW test their new power on their lines, and the eco-688b was not an exception.
It is currently in operation helping haul container freights from the container ports in Vancouver and Sidney to Chicago, both of which have extensive stretches of unwired trackage and can operate it in diesel mode nonstop for hundreds of kilometers at a time.
