When the Claremont Traction Company decided to re-electrify in 1993, the pickings for used motors was pretty slim and it took a trip to a recently dieselized steel mill in Canada to find a pair of 45 ton 650hp motors.
These motors were built by GE just before the second world war, but were still in almost spotless condition. Both of them – now numbered #1 & #2 – handled all of the freight on the CTC until 2024, when #1 was wrecked after a cement mixer truck lost its brakes and t-boned it.
#2 is still operating (renumbered as #1499 to fit into the PV&T’s roster) and there are no plans to take it out of service.
